Finding Work Again

When the economic recession hit, people who had never required support before suddenly found themselves in need of assistance. Barbara Shornick found herself in such a position in 2008, when she was let go as vice president of strategic marketing at Oxygen Media.

When Shornick heard about UJA-Federation of New York’s Connect to Care program through an unemployment support group at her synagogue, “I went and signed up right away,” she says. “And it gave me more structure to my week.” Shornick took part in mock interviews, got resume crafting advice, and shared networking strategies with fellow participants.

Eventually, her networking efforts paid off; a former co-worker unexpectedly helped Shornick land her current job as marketing director at Reader’s Digest last year. About being employed again, Shornick says, “I’m thankful every day.”

At the height of the recession, UJA-Federation launched Connect to Care, an initiative that uses its unique network of agencies to enable seven multiservice centers across New York City, Westchester, and Long Island to provide employment services, financial and emotional counseling, legal services, and Jewish spiritual care to those who need it. Since Connect to Care’s creation, the program has placed over 1,100 participants in new employment, and helped many others find work through large-scale job fairs and employment counseling services. In total, more than 47,000 people have received training and assistance.
