Can the triumph of Islamists in Egypt backfire against them?

...Initially the West and the Liberal media were ALL pressuring the SCAF (Supreme Council of Armed Forces) to leave power completely to the civilians via democratic elections. Many of those who took this stand against the SCAF based their position on a wrong perception or inaccurate surveys that Islamists will only win between 20-30% of the parliament seats. The results of the first stage of the elections were shocking for many of them and are likely to change the way they think.

The fear from the Islamists ruling Egypt was a wakeup call for liberal media, the Copts, business people who will be harmed if Islamists ruled the country (such as those who invested billions in tourism industry), and many others. In addition western leaders will have to face new realities on ground and will realize that it is better for their interests not to pressure the SCAF too much for complete transfer of power or for unconditional form of democracy. For example, after the results of the Egyptian elections showed domination by Islamist parties Hillary Clinton made it clear that: "We therefore expect all democratic actors and elected officials to uphold universal human rights, including women's rights, to allow free religious practice, to promote tolerance and good relations among communities of different faiths, and to support peaceful relations with their neighbors,". This attitude is different than the one taken in late November when the U.S. State Department condemned the recent violence in Tahrir, and has called on the S.C.A.F. to "transfer power to civilians as soon as possible".

Just before the recent elections the SCAF was facing several actors pushing for shift of power to the civilians. Now, many of these actors are starting to support the SCAF against the Islamists as they realized that accepting some level of Military dictatorship can be better for them than being ruled by Islamic Fascists. This realization can be a game changer as it will be very hard for Islamists to enforce their values when they are confronted with all the above powers united against them....
